To The Jungles That Be
Narratives of nature often leave out and lack BIPOC voices and perspectives. This project responds to that gap and starts with a question. What does nature mean to you? The Nature Conservancy's Baltimore Program asked Baltimore-based author and artist Kondwani Fidel that question. His answer was the poem "To The Jungles That Be."
Working collaboratively with a creative team from Baltimore, including BIPOC muralist and visual storyteller, Saba Hamidi, animator, Bronson Hoover, producer, Dave Cooper, and Black-owned web design team Noisy Tenants, TNC created the "To The Jungles That Be" campaign, which includes this animated video of the spoken-word poem, a website, and a series of workshops dedicated to collecting community stories and feedback. This initiative aims to leverage the power of art to initiate authentic dialogue around nature and trees in urban and underserved areas in Maryland with the ultimate goal of helping bring the benefits of the State’s Tree Solutions Now Act to the public.

Loved it. Have been to the DMtns years ago. Very interesting. I like the concept of thinning ponderosa. It tends to get 'dog-haired' without low intensity fires. I thought I heard that spotted owls like ponderosa. Hmm, when I was on the USDI Fish and Wildlife recovery team for the Mexican Spotted owl, pure ponderosa as I remember was not preferred habitat. Mixed conifer, riparian and ponderosa with an oak understory was utilized for habitat. One and two could switch depending but as I remember pine-oak was not utilized as much and pure ponderosa was not considered essential. However, there is something about ponderosa pine, large, with plenty of space and a grass understory that is so lacking. Well, thanks for the video. Loved it. Jim

    1. Switch from eating Beef to eating Bison🦬, or at least switch to only local Pasture Grazed. 2. Boycott Tysons Food Companies🏭; fight to stop Illegal Immigration. 3. Make a garden in your yard and eat from it and freeze/store some🍓🥒🧅 for the winter. 4. Get your own chickens, or at least switch to Free Range. (Cage Free doesn't mean crap) 5. Plant at least 8 trees🌳 per year.* 6. Replace your lawn grass with wildflower🌺🪻🌻 beds.* 7. Avoid buying anything made in China🇨🇳; support trade with RESPONSIBLE countries instead. * Or hire a local NATIVE plant landscaping business to do it.
